Bamburgh Castle sits upon the Northumberland Coast, overlooking the Village of Bamburgh. A gem in Northumberland, the historic landmark is one of Northumbria’s most recognizable visitor attractions, welcoming visitors from across the world. It offers a commanding view over the North Sea and Northumberland coast. To the North is Holy Island, a historic and religious site of pilgrimage, where a copy of the Lindesfarne Gospels can be seen.

The Grade One listed Castle is a Norman fort and was rebuilt following a Viking attack in the 10th Century. The Castle Keep dates to 1161 during which the Castle was owned by the Earl of Northumbria.  The Castle became under attack by William 2nd, King of England, whose forces attempted to capture the Castle. The Earl resisted and caused a revolt however, this was short lived when the Earl was eventually captured. His wife was left to defend the Fort until being forced to surrender.

Overtime, Bamburgh switched ownership and changed hands to Lord Crewe, Bishop of Durham, who purchased the Castle from Sir William Forster. Wiliam was Lord of the Manner whose Sister, Dorothy Forster, married Lord Crewe. Dorothy Forster had a brother called Tom whom supported the Jacobite rebellion.  Dorothy spared her brother from prison days before his trial, faking his funeral at Bamburgh Castle.  It is understood that he was hid in what is now The Lord Crew Arms, Blanchland  https://www.lordcrewearmsblanchland.co.uk/ before fleeing to France in exile.

In the late 19th Century, the Castle was sold to the great Victorian Newcastle Industrialist, William Armstrong who restored Bamburgh. Today, Bamburgh remains in the family of the Armstrongs and the Castle provides luxury accommodation as well as being a unique venue for weddings and events. Read more https://www.bamburghcastle.com/
